My students do not come into the classroom ready to learn! They come from hardship, trauma, and poverty! Specifically, that is why I feel we as teachers need to be trauma-informed and ready to start each and every day with the tools to change our students' emotions. Children wake up in the traumatic brain state either because they are tired, hungry, slept on the floor, had to walk in the rain, have a hole in their shoe, slept in the street, and much more. In order to get our students out of this brain state we as teachers need to use techniques to change a child's emotions to exit them from this state of mind. These techniques guide our students through mindfulness (breathing and calming) activities to prepare them to enter the learning state of mind. This is where it is sometimes heartbreaking to see my students on the floor of my classroom that has been crawling with cockroaches, bugs, and things that they see at home. To change their emotions in a positive light is to say the least...challenging! I am hoping to provide them with a yoga mat, a place of comfort and cleanliness. A personal space to meditate, breath, and alter their mindset in order to enter the thinking brain state for a positive instructional day of learning! These calming and breathing techniques like yoga, meditation, stretching, breathing, brain breaks, tapping daily on the yoga mats will most definitely help my students change their emotions from a negative to a positive. This positive energy will carry them through the meditation into their day of learning, peer and staff interaction, manners, and hopefully into the door as they enter their home at the end of the day!
