As adults, we can all agree that we engage in our best learning in a calming and comfortable environment. I strive to create various spaces in my classroom where students feel comfortable and have various options based on the activities they are engaging in. The ability to move and change the learning environment is important when students are in a block class (over an hour long) and engaging in many different types of activities. A calming spot with a rug and pillows is a comfortable place to settle in for silent reading time and to gather for discussion in lit circles. A large rug is also a place for students to gather for whole group drama and discussion activities. Settling in on a rug to meet as a class becomes a place where all students are visibly part of one group. This seems simple, but is also important to building a student-centered classroom that is based on trust and inclusiveness.
