Our classroom was lucky enough to receive almost 100 new books last year and the students love to read them. However, I have noticed that desks are not the safest place to keep books. They can easily get bent and ripped when other materials are added. Smaller chapter books can also get lost under folders or behind larger textbooks. We need a place to keep reading books so that students can get to them quickly and they stay nice for years to come. I have spoken to a number of other teachers about this problem and they recommend chair pockets. The pockets fit easily over the back of the student chairs and the books slide down to sit upright. That way the books have their own protected spot. Students don't have to get out of their seat to put away books between reads. They also know exactly where the books are so they don't have to waste time looking through their desks. Best of all books stay in good condition so that future classes can enjoy them.
