Math is a challenge for many of my students who have special needs. They work hard to be successful and learn, but many have learning challenges that cause them to struggle. By the time my students get to middle school, they are often behind their peers due to the length of time it takes for them to do complete mathematical operations. The use of a calculator saves them time and frustration. Further, it allows them to spend their energy on the processes being taught in middle school math rather than the basic facts they have not yet mastered. While I currently scrounge around to find calculators for my students to use, a classroom set of calculators would ease the need to share and create a higher level of independence for my students. Having a classroom set would allow me to teach the students how to utilize the calculators to help them solve the problems they are given.
