Throughout the school day, students gather together many times with the teacher on the floor. It may be for a story, for a writing lesson, or a math or science demonstration. Currently, I do not have a large rug area for these gatherings. Students sit on the tile floor. By having a classroom rug, students not only have a more comfortable space to sit on the floor, they also have a well-defined boundary, which helps minimize distracting behaviors. Young children often focus better for instruction when seated together with their teacher on the floor. Without a large rug space, children will be sitting on cold, hard tile. A large rug brings warmth and community to every lesson!
