My room is very small with only 161 square feet. We currently have a large round table that takes up 12% of the room as well as four individual student desks. With students in chairs at the table and several at desks, there is not much room to move in the classroom. The students need to be able move safely to the wall mounted whiteboards to work on problem solving in groups of two or three. Standing at the whiteboards while problem solving promotes engagement and makes student thinking visible to the teacher and other students. These students respond enthusiastically to challenging critical thinking problems and I want to allow them to work together with ease and flexibility. To do this, they need to be able to move easily and safely within our small space. A rectangular table is just what we need.
