We all want to find ourselves, right? Fifth-graders are no different. They want to relate to characters in print and immerse themselves in another world in which they can slay dragons, conquer a kingdom, and best a bully. Reading is an integral part of my classroom- and with these books, students will have the ability to self-select texts that appeal to their interests and life-experiences while still broadening their horizons. When you enter my classroom, you can find children sprawled on practically every surface with a book in their hands. The books on this list are titles that students have begged me to order for our classroom library- so you know they'll end up in good hands! We use our independent reading books to set personal goals, talk about our predictions, and practice a variety of skills. All of these book-talks help students think critically about text in all forms- a skill that they will use for the rest of their lives!
