These diverse and inclusive books will enrich each student's learning experience. Students will have the opportunity to see the world through the lives and feelings of characters different from themselves. President Obama has said, “when I think about how I understand my role as citizen . . . the most important stuff I’ve learned I think I’ve learned from novels.” Reading gives us an incalculable gift. Publishers, in recent years, have started to produce and promote more literature that reflects and honors the lives of all young people. Now educators must also rise to the challenge by getting these books into the hands of our students. Why? I think President Obama said it best: “It has to do with empathy [...] and the notion that it’s possible to connect with someone else even though they’re very different from you.” Great literature for children cultivates empathy. It is a path away from fear and misunderstanding, toward acceptance and inclusion.
