As a first year teacher, I spent a lot of time using trial and error in my classroom. One idea that I had was to incorporate flexible seating and other flexible arrangements into my classroom. One technique that I have been using is letting scholars listen to music while working. This technique is used to help calm scholars and aid them in focusing on their work. This past year I bought one yoga ball to see how my scholars would use this flexible seating choice. Having the yoga ball in my classroom made all the difference. I have found that much all scholars are much more productive when they are able to choose how they are working. Scholars who have struggled in the classroom found the yoga ball to be a thereaputic way to release stress and focus on their work. Scholars who are having a hard time focusing find it helpful to bounce and have the ability to move around help them complete their math. The idea of flexible seating and flexible work time is something that works very well in my classroom, but is not possible with the budget that is offered in my district. I would love more than one of my students to be able to access flexible seating and headphones during class time. We thank you for your consideration.
