Many students struggle to demonstrate their full abilities because they have difficultly sustaining their focus in the general education classroom. My goal as a special educator is to help my students and their teachers fully access all aspects of their school day. To do that, some students need sensory processing tools. Two of our most successful tools are noise dampening headphones to block out sound and allow students to improve their concentration, and weighted lap pad that center a student who may have difficult restraining bodily movements. These tools came make a world of difference for a struggling child. I have seen weighted lap pads turn a child who is constant movement into a full-focused student. Some teachers claim that it is real magic! Noise dampening headphones are so popular that we never seem to have enough to go around. Once students experience the benefits of these tools, they are asking for the supports and that puts them on the road to accelerated success!
