Our focus this year is in vocabulary acquisition. With increased vocabulary, scholars will then have improved reading comprehension. I have Reading Centers for small group instruction, and one of my centers is to look up words in a dictionary. Using a dictionary in class is a basic vital skill my scholars need in order to exert their independence. This is a skill that will allow them to improve their understanding of unknown words and spelling. The dictionaries I have right now, contain words that are inappropriate for children, and yet, those are the words my scholars seem to find. We need a class set of age-appropriate dictionaries to allow my scholars to independently complete classroom tasks.
