When speaking about life with Autism, Temple Grandin said, "I am different, but not less." I want my students to learn about others who are different, but are definitely not less! Reading these books will give my students an authentic opportunity to learn about teens who have disabilities. These stories will open the eyes of my students and help them to consider perspectives much different than their own. I am requesting six different books which address physical disabilities, mental disabilities, and learning disabilities. All of the characters in these stories display strength and determination that I know my students will learn from. I am requesting the following books to read in literature circles; Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, Mockingbird, Out of My Mind, Fish in a Tree, Restart, and OCDaniel. I know that my students will fall in love with these complex characters and genuinely relate to their stories of triumph, humor, insecurity, hardship, and loss. After reading these incredible stories, we will plan how to help people in our own communities who have the same disabilities and face similar challenges or obstactles. It is my hope that these stories will help my students become more empathetic and kind to everyone, no matter how different they seem on the surface. I want them to realize that they have more in common with these characters than they have differences. After reading these books, we will research what life is like for people with different disabilities and think of ways to help them in our own community to make a positive change.
