My 7th and 8th graders attend a traditional public middle school of 1500 students in California. I teach self-contained special education math and science which means that all my students have mild to moderate learning disabilities and need more support than students in general education. The majority of my students have specific learning disabilities and need a lot of structure, routine and scaffolding to learn. They are full of energy but haven't felt successful in school because of a lack of foundational skills. My students read on average at a 2nd grade level and performing math on average at a second grade level as well. My kids are excited to learn but don't know how. They need to be explicitly taught skills like how to take notes, stay organized and review information in addition to math and science content.
