Most schools do not have these books because it is just one more costly item. Yet, you made that happen for Samuel Gompers Middle School and we are so grateful! These small books will help us to reinforce phonics lessons, promote reading, and to give students a sense of accomplishment.\r\n\r\nFirst of all, most of the secondary schools in our district use the same scripted program to teach phonics. However, the program does not include books or imbedded reading opportunities that allow the students to practice the skills that they acquire in each lesson. The phonics readers allow the teacher to assess the level of each student's language acquisition immediately after the instruction has been given. And because they don't appear to students as assessments, they are a win for us all. \r\n\r\nMy students in my second period class love these books because the books are so small and can be finished in one sitting. This make them want to read! Thank you!","fullyFundedDate":1757116458963,"projectUrl":"project/literacy-building-blocks/9517653/","projectTitle":"Literacy Building Blocks","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Black","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8807961_orig.jpg?crop=653,653,x37,y61&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1688646548696","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8807961"},{"teacherId":10096541,"projectId":9505554,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our math classroom has transformed into a more hands-on, collaborative space — and my students felt the impact immediately.\r\n\r\nThe day the materials arrived, my students walked in and froze when they saw everything laid out on the front table. Several of them whispered, \"Is this all for us?\" One student picked up a freshly laminated math station card and said, \"Wait, we can reuse these forever?\" Their excitement was instant and genuine — there's something powerful about seeing new materials that were chosen specifically for their learning.\r\n\r\nSince then, we've put everything to use. The laminator has allowed me to create durable math stations where students rotate through tasks on fractions, graphing, and real-world problem-solving. One of my favorite moments came during a graphing lesson last week: students used sticky notes to make predictions, graphed their data on the new graph paper, and checked their work on laminated reference charts. Even students who usually hesitate during math jumped in confidently because they had clear, organized tools at their fingertips.\r\n\r\nThe dry-erase markers have become a daily staple. Students use them on whiteboards and laminated surfaces to show their reasoning, revise their ideas, and collaborate without fear of \"messing up.\" It's been incredible to see how much more they participate when they can erase, rethink, and try again.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're starting a multi-step data analysis project where students will collect real classroom data, graph it, and present their conclusions. The new materials — especially the graph paper, markers, and reusable station cards — will make it possible for every student to explore the math deeply and share their thinking with confidence. They're already asking, \"When do we get to use the stations again?\" which is exactly the kind of excitement I hoped these resources would inspire.\r\n\r\nYour support didn't just provide supplies — it opened up new possibilities for engagement, creativity, and pride in learning. My students and I are truly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1755754338963,"projectUrl":"project/tools-to-make-math-click/9505554/","projectTitle":"Tools to Make Math Click!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Contreras","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10096541"},{"teacherId":10172712,"projectId":9601854,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your support in funding this project. Our class folders keeps work organized, and my students have been extremely engaged with whiteboards, markers, and erasers in order to develop their English skills. We have been using the whiteboard folders to do a lot of close reading on texts and ELPAC practice. My students find it a lot more fun to actively use whiteboards to make annotations and interact with their material. There has also been a lot of usage in the folder and bins; given the amount of students in my class, it has helped create a classroom routine where students can grab their folders and journals, and begin their assigned daily task.\r\n\r\nWhen my students looked at the college pennants, magnets, and white board magnetic folders, they felt our room was a lot less empty and a lot more colorful and welcoming. Your contribution has helped make my students feel safe and welcome when they come to my classroom. \r\n\r\nMy next steps for my students are to engage with phonetics and classroom verbal discourse more in preparation for the ELPAC as well as in support of their language development. I plan to integrate a Spanish-to-English mini library in my class as well to further their reading development, and I also plan to implement station rotations so that I can support differentiation with all my varied-leveled English learners.\r\nThank you so much again!","fullyFundedDate":1755754339366,"projectUrl":"project/support-english-learners-with-supplies/9601854/","projectTitle":"Support English Learners With Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Santaolaya","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10172712"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_7570","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":428,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":35,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":61,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"16.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":63.6,"schoolId":7570,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Samuel Gompers Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Samuel Gompers Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/samuel-gompers-middle-school/7570"}
