Students, especially ESOL students, need as much exposure to informational texts as possible. Finding material that is both relevant to their lives and at an appropriate reading level is difficult. Most articles in newspapers are dry and chock full of difficult vocabulary, while articles aimed at students are about historical events or written too simplistically. SCOPE Magazine is a wonderful resource that provides articles about current events, along with higher order thinking questions and prompts to help students with critical thinking skills and constructed responses. These are both key skills that students need to develop in order to continue on to high school and excel in their education.
