A Scholastic News subscription provides my students with non-fiction, up to date reading material/resources that is at their grade level. The subscription includes a monthly package of 5 or 6 different issues with enough leaflets for each of my students to have their own. Each package is filled with monthly themes (i.e. December's package can include material about penguins, holidays around the world, etc.) which makes planning for lessons very fun and engaging for my students. These magazines are versatile because they are helpful to use in small reading groups to learn and emphasize non-fiction text features as well as during social studies/science as a supplemental text. Aside from the magazines, the subscription includes different videos and activities that can accompany the reading as well. Many times, the magazine topics line up well with what is being taught in ELA, science, or social studies throughout the month and result to be a great tool to help my students deepen their understanding. Students are always excited to see the monthly package come in and are even more impatient to see what kinds of topics come in the month. Scholastic News caters to a variety of interests and thus promotes excitement and a desire to read on!
