By funding our book / reading project, my students will be able to take what we learn in biology outside of the classroom. I want to create a small science-only-library in my biology lab. My school district has a district-wide initiative for literacy. However, our funding is very limited and resources incredibly scarce. One of the biggest obstacles for my students is the language itself. They struggle with reading comprehension and interpretation. This will be a special support for the English Learner (EL) population. The EL population the group of students who speak English as a second language. Most of my student's primary home language is Spanish, and many times no books are in the household. Having access to check-out books related to science will increase the amount of reading they do and enhance their reading comprehension. This will allow the student to practice their reading skills which will help them overcome the language barrier. My goal is not only to bring more literacy into the classroom but also allow them to take it back home. I am a strong believer that reading opens the mind for more complex thinking. If my students are better readers, they will be able to comprehend complex ideas at a much higher level.
