I am hoping to upgrade the seating options offered in my classroom to increase student learning. My students are so eager to learn but often their sensory and body control needs get in the way. Therefore, I am looking to add cube chairs, weighted sensory pillows, and non-distracting fidgets to help my students learn! It can be difficult for my students to control their bodies and sit calmly on the rug. Currently, I have 6 students with body control needs sitting on normal classroom chairs while we are on the rug. This has helped to minimize disrupting other students on the rug. However, they still have difficulty controlling their own bodies and it heavily impacts their ability to be engaged in the lesson. Cube chairs, weighted blankets, and non-distracting fidgets are a great way to help kids control their bodies! The cube chairs, with the tall sides, help keep their bodies in place and facing forward. It is also a safer seating option for my students who have a tendency to tip their chairs. The weighted pillows are a great sensory tool to further calm my students. The weighted pillow helps calm the students' bodies so they are able to focus better. Finally, non-distracting fidgets will allow my students to get some of their residual energy out in a way that does not disrupt learning. I have used these tools in previous schools with students with similar needs. I have seen the great improvement they have on learning as students are able to focus better on the teacher!
