My students come from an economically challenged neighborhood. Bluntly put, this neighborhood has the greatest number of drug houses, violent crimes, and murders in all of the county. Despite all of this, or maybe because of the poverty and the neighborhood problems, my students want to come to school. At school they are safe, fed, and eager to learn. Most of my students are Hispanic and second language learners. The rest of my class are African-American and Pacific Islanders. They are all good kids, some just dealing with problems beyond their years.
