My students have historically struggled to develop a stem identity. Most students refuse to believe when I tell them that they are true scientists, investigating the world around them. Next year, each student will have their own kit of glassware and their own lab experiment space to carry out and testing that they choose. In order to support their sense of performing truly relevant real-world, science, as well as improving their comfort and safety while performing lab procedures, I would like to get a classroom set of lab coats and safety glasses. My hope is to transform my classroom into a science laboratory where students are real scientists investigating the ongoing phenomena of the physical universe. I believe dressing out for science class in a classic scientist outfit that helps improve lab procedures will help them to truly believe that they are scientists.
