These books will allow my English-speaking students the opportunity to immerse themselves in stories that are written in Spanish. The level 1 stories are perfect for my 7th and 8th grade Spanish 1 students, as they contain many high frequency, or commonly-used, words. This means that my students will be able to read the stories fairly comfortably, and will feel pride in knowing that they have completed novels written entirely in Spanish. While the novels contain many high frequency words, they also introduce a lot of new vocabulary to ensure that students continue to learn and acquire new language through the reading process. For the large majority of my students, Spanish class is their first exposure to a language and culture other than their own. My students live primarily in 4 small towns along the Ohio River in West Virginia. Many have not traveled far out of the area and have not experienced much in the way of diversity. They look forward to coming to my class, and I want to provide them with as many cultural opportunities and experiences as possible. The books I have selected give my students a window in which to view a whole new world. I hope that the knowledge they gain from these books and my classroom will instill in them an appreciation and respect for diversity as well as the confidence to use their language skills outside of the classroom environment.
