Science students are grounded in the NGSS practice of modeling. Models are created to explain the relationship between two or more systems, or components of one system. Integral in modeling is the ability to visually represent the ideas that are in the mind. Students often draw and initial model, complete further research, experimentation, or receive feedback from other students; this requires them to modify initial models. Students rise to the occasion when they can use other talents such as artistic ability in science class. This connection allows them to consider their thoughts spatially, and how best to visually represent the details of processes such as molecular rearrangement of chemical reactions, periodic properties such as ionization energy and Coulombic attraction, and acid-base titrations, to name a few.
