There aren't enough words to express how excited my students are to come to art class. Their enthusiasm reaches far beyond the four walls that encompass my room. Recently, our school sustained wind damage from a tornado which flooded one hallway, tore through classroom windows and ripped off the top of the playground equipment. With a vengeance, it destroyed the transformer which supplied electricity to our facility. As a result, everyone was displaced to another school in our parish. In addition, lack of circulating air and humidity caused many of my paper products to "buckle," making them unusable; our homemade art journals were damp and unattractive. The weather may have damaged our little, rural school but it did not take away our spirit for learning....especially when it comes to my little "Rembrandts!" You see, my school's demographics include mostly African American children who eat free meals and come to school ready to learn, putting their heart in nearly everything that they set their mind to. Our plan is to use the card stock to create projects with our watercolors. The students enjoy displaying their artwork in the hallways, and card stock paper is sturdier and more durable. I always encourage my students to sketch and design before beginning greater tasks. The sketchbooks would be utilized for planning and practice purposes. Many take pride in their creations and want to take it one step beyond their original drawings. So, these sketchbooks would allow them to begin what they like to call their "masterpieces!" Finally, your generous contribution would definitely put a smile on many faces at St. Louis Academy (formerly Fifth Ward Elementary). I graciously thank you for considering us!
