Students learn science best when they experience it with their own eyes. Video, better than photos, text, or stories, engages students brains. Video can show phenomenon that will make scientific concepts 'sticky' and easy to remember. Using videos my students are inspired by, and immersed in, ground-breaking research - not bored with common textbook examples. Given my students' background - growing up in New York City, (with a stunning lack of nature) it can be hard to anchor ecological phenomenon around a common experience. With video, my students can see these phenomenon with their own eyes. They become more engaged and can have much higher comprehension of topics presented. In my classroom we use video during small groups to visualize anchoring phenomenon, get alternate explanation of ideas (TedTalks, BrainPop, etc), and check hypothesis against real world events. Unfortunately, when we use videos now, my room feels loud and disorganized, ultimately leading to an unproductive learning environment. With headphones, our classroom will be significantly less chaotic, increasing learning outcomes for all. Thank you for your support!
