My students are deaf, and becoming bilingual in American Sign Language and English. Their fluency and comfort in ASL and English vary greatly. They are eager to learn, enthusiastic, hard workers. Many of them aspire to university. Their greatest disability isn't being deaf; it's social perceptions of deaf people and their language skills. I have high expectations for them, and they are aware of those expectations.
