In my second year of teaching, I realized how important the structure of a classroom affected student engagement and achievement. I am also passionate about social-emotional learning and mental health in disadvantaged communities. I am on a mission to educate my students in my third year via the curriculum but also on coping mechanisms to work through challenges and traumas. I seek to use flexible seating materials for the students who struggle with sitting on a traditional desk. I will use the bins to store laptops, headphones, and classroom materials under their desks to circumvent frustrations about access to "their" laptop and headphones. Lastly, I have noticed how classroom cleanliness and organization sets the tone for the entire class. I put an oil diffuser in my classroom this year, and the entire classroom environment changed!
