The most current educational research shows that flexible seating is the best way to address students' individual social, emotional, developmental, and academic needs in the classroom. Specifically, research identifies ten areas that are highly impacted by allowing students the opportunity to choose the learning area that best suits them in the classroom. They are improvements in choice making, physical health, comfort and security, community development, enhanced collaboration, increased commitment to learning, enhanced communication, better suited to address sensory needs, and an improved sense of fun in the learning process. My students frequently struggle to remain seated and focused on a task for any extended period of time. Many have sensory and developmental disorders that make the traditional desk and chair model ineffective and frequently leads to behavior and peer engagement problems. By allowing my students the opportunity to pick the learning space best suited to them, I believe they will reach new highs academically, as well as socially, developmentally, and emotionally. Flexible seating will also promote their love of school and will help make the learning process fun and engaging for their young minds!
