Having to sit through an 80 minute class period in a desk that is too small for your body is uncomfortable and humiliating. Paying attention and engaging in lessons is hard to do when you are uncomfortable. One of our students, who is both tall and very broad, will skip classes if he arrives too late to class to get one of the chairs at a table (instead of a tiny desk). The novelty and stimulation students receive through an interactive and flexible classroom setting positively impacts behavior, according to educational researcher Sheryl Feinstein’s book From the Brain to the Classroom. These seats will help our students feel more comfortable in their classrooms and cared for by their school. Each classroom will eventually get a small collection of flexible seating for students who need accommodations for size or the need for movement. More comfortable students will be students who are more likely to attend to the lesson and engage in learning. A more comfortable and developmentally appropriate classroom will increase the likelihood that our students will feel cared for by their school and therefore increase engagement in class and school attendance.
