Each of the tools in this project is designed to help students understand the why behind the math. My classroom has several students with math disabilities. The abacus uses base 10 concepts to help students add, subtract, and multiply in a concrete way. They can touch and move the math they are working on to have it make sense to them. With fraction bars students will master equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions. Decimals disks make the abstract concept of place value tangible. By physically moving and using these tools in a hands-on way students will be able to build conceptual understanding of math.
