My students love to explore and learn new things about other cultures, including their own. Having culturally diverse books where students can see themselves represented in their literature is a powerful message to send. Students are able to see that they are valued, they are important, they are beautifully and wonderfully made. They beam with a sense of pride never seen before when they are able to share a piece of themselves with others. When children are able to read books that they relate to, it makes the joy of reading all the more powerful and meaningful to them. Picture books make reading fun and engaging for all students and gets children of any age excited to learn. I use picture books in my classroom to teach a multitude of lessons ranging from kindness, empathy, responsibility, theme, main idea, and working hard. The possibilities are endless when you place a book into a child's hands.
