I teach a small group of grade 9 special education students. It is a pull out English class where we work on reading and writing by using the 9th grade state standards but modified to meet their individual needs. My project will reach 13 students. My students are below grade level in their reading ability. It is difficult to find high interest novels to read which really grab their attention. The Hunger Games is a really great novel for this age group. The novel contains lots of figurative language which is a big part of their curriculum. Also, the novel can be used to make connections to math and social studies. There is also a ton of vocabulary in the book which can be taught using context clues. This is a novel I have used in the past and it went so well. The kids loved it! Unfortunately I don't have access to a class set to use to teach it. I would love my own set to keep in my room and use to teach this fun and engaging novel.
