Many of these players would be seen as at-risk youth. As a large component of the children in the program are black males, they represent a demographic that faces structural and systemic disadvantages. Howard (2014) describes that black males continue to be undereducated, over-incarcerated, socially and culturally misunderstood, and in pursuit of an identity that allows them to be viewed as intellectually adept and worthy of inclusion in the American dream. We want to reach more youth and engage further with our community. We would be using the funding to purchase team uniforms, rent practice space, and conduct outreach to let our community know our expansion plans. FTL's basketball league has 6 teams, composed of 12-13 players each, for a total of 72 to 78 players. The boys and girls on the teams range from age 11 to age 16 and are majority African American with a strong representation of Hispanics and other minorities. The fees for each child to play on the team is covered by generous sponsorships. We are hoping that our basketball league will show similar numbers.
