The majority of my students are below grade level in reading but they absolutely love listening and following along with class read alouds that are at or above grade level. I have used the novel Holes by Louis Sachar in previous years and my students love the story. With distance learning, I think having a copy of the novel and following along will greatly increase engagement and focus. This in turn will allow us to have deeper conversations about the 4th grade standards. Especially with Covid 19, my families are struggling to provide adequate reading materials for various reasons. I believe my student's excitement about reading independently will increase if they have access to this novel and we will also be able to have engaging classroom discussions.
