For students to improve their reading skills at the middle school age level, they must be interested in what they are reading. The book The War That Changed My Life is a historical look at a young girl's experience during World War II. The students can relate to it because they are the same age as the girl, plus the event of World War II are not only important but also fascinating to students this age. My students have voiced their interest in learning more about this incredible time period. Every day all of our learning activities will be focused around the content of this amazing book. We will use it to first work on our reading skills because this is our first and foremost goal of the summer reading program that I am teaching. Then we will use the content of the book for writing lessons, history lessons, math lessons, science lessons, and any other lesson that relates to the content of the book. Our goal for the summer is for each student involved in the program to improve their reading level to at or above grade level.
