I spent a few days showing students the steps to weave a potholder. Students excelled at this with bit by bit instructions. As students looms started to fill, weaving became more difficult. This is the point where students had to decide to persevere and they did not disappoint! Students were figuring out where they made a mistake and they helped each other \"smoosh\" the loops together so there was more room to weave. The best moments were when a few students were struggling with the pattern and their friends helped them figure out what to do next. Weaving has become a time for students to authentically help each other.\r\n\r\nAfter the initial teaching about how to weave the potholders the activity took off. The only time students are allowed to weave is at the end of the day during our read aloud. Students get packed up, clean the room, and settle in to listen to the book and weave. They are focused on this tactile activity and listening. It is amazing how much they are comprehending what is being read while their hands are busy. \r\n\r\nI had many parents comment about their student's weaving project at Family Conferences. They told me of their student's plan of what to do with the end product, a gift for a loved one, keep for themselves, and even sell them for a profit! Needless to say students are excited to be able to create and keep their potholders. The best example of engagement is that the student who struggled most with his pattern had his Mom order a loom and loops for home so he could practice. He was so excited to show me his potholder he made at home.\r\n\r\nThis project has been good for my entire class. Everyone is working together, learning now things and thinking in new ways. We will continue making potholders throughout the year until we run out of loops. The introduction of this non-technical textile art has been a hit in our classroom. \r\n\r\nYour donation has made a difference in the lives of not only the students in my class, but extended to their families as well.
