The Big Dark, by Rodman Philbrick, is a YA novel set 10 years in the future when a solar flare causes the world to go dark. The book follows a teenage boy in a small town, as he tries to help the town and his family survive a power outage in the middle of winter. After we reading this book, we will be researching the Carrington Event in 1859 and the possibility of a similar incident happening in the future. This will provide student's with a fun and educational end of the year activity, that will hopefully encourage continued reading through the summer months.
