Our public elementary school has a diverse population of 200 students, with over half participating in the Spanish immersion program. Most of my students are reluctant readers, that is, it is difficult for them to be inspired by reading. Although, when guided in the right direction, with individual attention, it is possible to find the perfect book for my students and get them excited about reading. A small percentage visit the library on their own time, and stretch out on the dingy carpet to read. However, many students are not excited about visiting the library with their classes because there literally is not anywhere to sit, except on the current carpet (which is worn, and too small to accommodate a class) or on the concrete floor. I usually feel badly for them because in order for all of them to see the book I am reading to them, I get to sit in a chair. I would love to have a group circle instead, and I would love to join them on the carpet, but our carpet is too small.
