It has given them a clear, welcoming space to focus and connect. The rug has also supported routines—students know that when they come to the rug, it's time to transition into learning together. This predictability has fostered emotional safety and helped students regulate their energy.\r\n\r\nThe impact is visible: discussions are more focused, collaboration has deepened, and students are more eager to participate. It was her first time being chosen to share her work, and she was nervous. She asked me to choose someone else. As she walked up to the easel to start writing her math solution, she looked one last time at me. I nodded and smiled as her classmates leaned in, curious to see how she had solved the problem. As she wrote out her steps and explained her thinking, hands shot up—not to correct her, but to ask questions, to compare strategies, and to build on her ideas. This student smiled as she realized her classmates were learning from her, and she was learning from them. When she was done, she had a big, proud smile on her face. In her reflection, she wrote: Today was a good day because I put my work on the board. \r\n\r\nMoments like this happen every day now. The easel has become a stage where students proudly present their work, practice clear communication, and engage in respectful discussion. They see that there isn't just one \"right way\" to solve a problem, and that exploring different perspectives deepens understanding. Students who once stayed quiet now step forward with confidence, and collaboration has grown stronger.\r\n\r\nThe impact is visible: math scores have improved, but more importantly, students have developed skills in problem-solving, presentation, and teamwork that will serve them far beyond the classroom. And for students that are still learning how to write they are able to ask their friends for help finding the correct sounds in the word they're trying to write. \r\n\r\nDuring literacy centers students have enjoyed creating pictures together and then helping each other write a sentence to match their picture. When they have the chance to collaborate on their writing they are extremely engaged and they're all able to bring their specific gifts to the writing experience.
