If you have spent more than 5 minutes with any 6 year old, you will know in an instant why flexible seating is a game changer for education. Asking a quick-minded young child to sit still in an uncomfortable hard-backed chair is not conducive to learning in today's high-tech and fast-paced society. It produces poor posture and is incredibly difficult for students with sensory difficulties or hyperactivity. Research has proven that children take more ownership of the classroom when they can choose their seats and are given the freedom to move around when needed. With clear expectations and procedures, flexible seating is becoming the new normal in education. Students can come to the carpet to devour independent books, wiggle comfortably while discussing math strategies, or bounce gently on a yoga ball to help ease writer's block. Parents will also benefit from flexible seating. No longer will a child come home bursting with energy from being seated all day. They will be able to focus their physical activity into educational outcomes. It will also help those kiddos that just can't help but wiggle or stand in order to clear their minds and focus on their work. I can't wait to encourage children to be themselves and learn the way they feel is most comfortable!
