Fine motor skills involve the use of the small muscles that control the hand, fingers, and thumb. They help children perform important life tasks like feeding themselves, grasping toys, buttoning and zipping clothes, writing, cutting with scissors, drawing, and many more. As children grow in their fine motor skills, their self-esteem grows too. Some children may struggle with performing tasks that use their fine motor skills. This can cause them to become frustrated and upset when they can’t complete every day task that many of us take for granted. If we are patient and provide a supportive environment for them to work on these skills, I know my students will blossom to the best they can be! By implementing these fine motor activities into the Functional Life Skills Classroom the IEP team will be able to carry over the skills that my students are working on during therapy sessions into their therapeutic centers time. These fine motor manipulative will enhance the classroom centers by helping the students build their fine motor skills, hand strength, hand eye coordination, and bilateral coordination skills.
