Technology is all around us. Students today are entering a world where iPhones and iPads are a normal part of their daily lives. Unfortunately, in my classroom, this type of technology is limited. I plan to integrate technology seamlessly in the classroom to help students learn to use these tools not only as gaming devices, but as tools that will help them solve problems in the real world, seek knowledge through research, and use technology to communicate effectively. My students are constantly asking questions that lead us beyond the standard curriculum. Access to technology would give them the opportunity to work together to seek out the information they desire and share it with the class. For example, we are studying financial literacy. I would love for my students to have access to a website that allows students to "run" a lemonade stand. The students then take into account weather conditions, cost of materials, and supply and demand in order to set their prices and sell their lemonade. Groups of students could share their experiences with the class to talk about how the variables affected their sales. Some of my students need extra practice, or help with English because they are new to the country. The iPads will help me differentiate my classroom. Some students can work on objectives they need, such as math operations or problem solving. We use Imagine Math in our district, so I can set a path for that student that meets his/her needs. I can then monitor that path to better identify areas of strength and areas that need improvement. Students new to the country need help with reading and comprehension. In science and social studies, technology can provide reading assistance to these students. Across the board, iPads in the classroom would enhance student learning.
