Due to the unique challenges our students face, the majority of our students began this school year reading below first-grade expectations. Fortunately, through hard work and explicit instruction, our students have made significant gains. With these gains our students' confidence levels have also increased. We would like to keep the momentum going by supporting their reading fluency. By building their reading fluency our students will develop better reading comprehension and stay motivated to become better readers. Becoming a fluent reader involves developing automatic flow, accuracy, prosody and expression, in order to strengthen the bridge to reading comprehension.
When students are able to read with ease and expression they are more likely to understand what they are reading and make gains in their reading comprehension skills. The whisper phones we are requesting will provide the students with auditory feedback. While students are reading (Independently or in small groups), they will whisper into these small phones and the sounds will get amplified, so that they are able to more clearly hear the words and sounds they are saying. The students can then practice reading words and sentences several times until it sounds more natural and less labored to them.
We currently have access to a few whisper phones that our students take turns using. Not only have we already noticed improvement with some of our students, but we also see how it makes reading ”fun” for our students. They love hearing themselves while practicing their reading! Your support in securing more whisper phones for our classroom will help our students become better readers, keep them enthusiastic about learning and make reading “fun”!
