The students who participate in this program are students who want to make a difference in their community and who need extra love and support. When the older students are paired with their younger student, they get an hour after school to do whatever the younger student wants. Unfortunately, we don't always have the materials to make this happen. The materials chosen for this project are a combination of highly requested objects from last year and ones that encourage them to play, use social skills, and use critical thinking. When it is time for mentoring to begin, the big kids will pick up their little friends from their classroom. They will then come back to my classroom, and they will sign out an activity for the day. They can change this activity as many times as they want. Having a variety of materials for them to choose from would make this time even more enjoyable. While working with their mentor, the younger students will learn self-regulation and other important lessons that will transfer back to the classroom and beyond.
