This pandemic has taken a toll emotionally on all of us, especially our students. Our students come from low-income households, are predominantly Hispanic and our school is over 60% second language learners. These sensory tools and items will help many students self regulate and manage their emotions. The needed items are important for our students to learn safe coping skills. The tools and items will assist us in creating a positive, calm environment for our students. These items will be used for all students at our school when they need to calm down and cope with things going on in their life. These items assist us in teaching coping skills and emotion regulation. Items like these create a safe, positive place for our students to feel comfortable to open up. We will use the emotion tools and calm down toys during individual and small group lessons. Currently we have small groups focused on anger management, family changes and grief. The goal is for students to be able to identify their own emotions and then choose effective coping skills to use when needed. One of the lessons we do is to teach Kinder/1st graders how to identify their emotions. We discuss all the different emotions and what each of them mean and how they feel. We will use the emotion faces and monster faces to have kids show those emotions using facial expressions. Another lesson we will do is with a small group to discuss conflict/resolution and the consequences of our actions. We will use the game to discuss different actions and consequences to those choices. (1.ME.K.1, Identify different emotions and 4.IC.K.1, Name healthy ways to express needs, wants, and feelings to enhance health and to avoid or reduce health risks.
