As an English teacher, I strive to bring my passion for reading to my classroom, unfortunately, my bookshelf does not show this. Most of my books are either freebies or hand-me-downs from my school that just don't resonate with my students. I want to be able to provide my kids with literature that they will want to read, something that they will lose themselves in, while also building reading skills. Many of these books bring cultural relevancy to my bookshelf, allowing students to see themselves in literature, sometimes for the very first time. Aside from building passionate readers, I am also looking to create storytellers out of my students, and sometimes that means looking in an area that is not typically thought of for education. I have also included a copy of a Dungeons & Dragons collection to help facilitate student storytelling through the use of the venerable role playing experience. This will be used for an after school club that will teach the concepts of building a story and writing for a specific audience. I am extremely excited for what these books and resources can mean for my students, both as readers and writers.
