Currently, I am on summer break, but I am already thinking about my classroom and my future students that I will meet in August. I have an interior room and I generally turn off one set of lights daily to combat florescent light fatigue; as my students fight headaches, tiredness, anxiety, and irritability, despite brain breaks and encouragement. I need to be able to turn off the harsh florescent lighting, but have soft lighting options in the room to allow the students to be to able to complete individual and small group collaboration. There are several studies that encourage the use of soft lighting in the classroom to increase student motivation and academic achievement. We would use these items everyday and it would lead to further academic achievement, but more importantly a greater sense of classroom community and a place of peace.
