My science class is creating their own projects based on their passions. The project is called Genius Hour. It is designed to help students develop a project from start to finish. Students learn research skills, presentation skills, communication skills, independent learning, in addition to scientific content. One of the projects includes the creation of a model magnetic levitation train with the intention of using that model to teach the class about magnetism and specifically magnetic levitation. One passionate student is creating his own model train to experience first hand how the magnets repel to create levitation and movement. He will be conducting extensive research to understand the design of magnetic levitation trains, and in turn, he will be learning about magnetism. He will share the model with his classmates and teach them what he has learned using his train model as a teaching tool.
