An SEP for HS LS 2 of the NGSS requires students to use mathematical and quantitative thinking to analyze interdependent relationships of organisms in an ecosystem. In April, I will begin my ecology unit. During the unit I want students to use Google Maps to select three different sites around the Clovis East area where they wish to examine the effect of humans on species richness and abundance of local bird and mammal species. The goal is for students to write and present a research paper where act as a local ecologist analyzing the effect of a single anthroprogenic factor that affect a community of birds or mammals in the selected habitat. Once a week students will analyze camera data to graph populations. They will also collect other abiotic sources of data (temperature, air pollution, traffic) to find correlations between an anthroprogenic factor and a community population. While they collect data, they will learn about population ecology and ecological interactions. Also, they will spend time in the library to conduct research about the bird and mammal species they have found in the area. At the end of the unit students will write a research paper and create a presentation.
