Aquaponics is putting fish to work by supplying our herb garden with nutrients. The fish work by eating and producing waste, which is the perfect fertilizer for growing plants! Aquaponics mimics a natural ecosystem. My students will learn about the relationship between water, aquatic life, bacteria, nutrient dynamics, and plants which will grow together. They will get hands-on experience in raising fish and plants. This will help them understand how the fish provide nutrients to the plants which will then provide us nutrients as we eat them. Students will engage in selecting different types of herbs to grow and research the variety of fish that is most beneficial to the plants' needs. This activity will promote students that are conscious of our natural resources and how to use them efficiently.
