The novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is one that speaks to students on various levels. Teaching this novel has always been such a positive experience for myself and my students. This year, I have to be careful with the handling of our resources. At this time, I do not have a text for every student on my team. It is important that I use texts in my classroom that speak to my students and help them better understand something about themselves and the world they live in. Using a novel such as this allows the students to make connections to the characters and learn valuable lessons that will inspire them in the years to come. By providing each student with their own copy of the novel, I am ensuring that they have the ability to read whether at home during distance learning or in school on days we meet. Using this text, our 8th graders will develop mastery of several important curriculum objectives including developing a theme analysis and making meaningful connections to the text. In various lessons, they will study the characters, the author's word choice and language use, develop their ideas about possible themes, and support their thinking with in depth analysis of the text.
